Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union Research and Innovation event calendar
As of 1 January 2024 Belgium takes over the baton from Spain as President of the Council of the European Union until 30 June 2024. During the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union several high-level summits and conferences will take place including in the area of research and innovation. Some of the events will be open to anyone interested and others for a restricted audience only. It is expected that the website for the Belgian Presidency will be launched early December 2023. All the events related to research and innovation and with the Flemish Government Department of Economy, Science and Innovation in the lead will be made available on their website in the event section. The events linked to Horizon Europe and Digital Europe will be included in the NCP Flanders event calendar. You might want to mark these dates already in your diary:
- 5 and 6 February 2024 “Research to Reality: Digital Solutions to European Challenges”
- 18 and 19 April 2024 “MSCA Presidency Conference”
- 14 and 15 May 2024 “Europe united against old and new pandemics“
- 28 and 29 May 2024 “The convergence of technologies enabling R&I for the healthcare of the future”

Autoship - a new and durable way of freight transport
Autoship is, as the name suggests, an acronym for autonomous ship. Just like with self-driving cars, the possibilities of an unmanned boat seem endless. It can create more efficient freight transport, around the clock deliveries and these are just a few of the examples. The project has two societal challenges.
At first, De Vlaamse Waterweg was a bit hesitant as their experience with FP7 or Horizon 2020 projects was limited and they had not been very successful up until then. The fact that they were already doing basic research on the topic of autonomous boats, and the administrative help of NCP FLanders helped De Vlaamse waterweg to cross the line and get involved.
