With the main submission deadline of this year behind us, it's time to have a look at the remaining open call topics for 2022. Currently there are 46 call topics in Cluster4 open for submission.

The submision deadlines are in about 3 months (range between 6 and 16 November) and all are single-stage calls.

In this article we'll have a quick look at the opportunities.

In order to quickly grasp the domains, it's best to look at the call topic acronyms. We can differentiate the following groups:

5 calls of the Key Digital Technologies (KDT) Joint Undertaking (JU)

  • KDT was formerly called Ecsel, and this is a JU, thus a public-private partnership for r&d&I (between the EC, member states and industry), to co-manage funding calls in the field of electronic components and systems.
  • As this is a dedicated ecosystem, with it's own dynamics, it is best to connect with the JU directly. More info can be found on the KDT Calls 2022 page. In Flanders, KDT assistance is provided by VLAIO.

1 call of the European High Performance Computing (EuroHPC) Joint Undertaking (JU)

8 calls within the digital & emerging technologies subdomain

  • Focus on two-dimensional materials (like graphene).
    • With 3 research topics focussing on biomedical applications and energy storage/harvesting tech, and advanced electronic and photonic 2D materials-based solutions.
    • And an innovation topic on2D-material-based composites, coatings & foams.
    • 1 supporting topic (CSA) related to the management of the Graphene Flagship projects.
  • 3 topics on AI-related topics a research topic on pushing the limit of physical intelligence and performance, and innovation topics on applying AI for industry optimisation,  and demonstrating robotics capabilities in key sectors. => Check the ADRA infoday and brokerage recordings for more info and details.

2 calls within the Human-centered & Ethical Development subdomain

  • Building AI for human empowerment (linked with the AI, Data and Robotics Partnership), focussing on research
  • A mixed research (and support action), that aims at at developing AI knowledge and achoring it in the build-up of the European AI lighthouse
  • Check the ADRA infoday and brokerage recordings for more info and details

28 Mission related calls

  • Missions are commitments to solve some of the greatest challenges facing our world. As they are an integral part of Horizon Europe, and aim to build on knowledge developed in the different domains, they also show up here.
  • The calls are thematically spread in 4 groups: Ocean, seas and waters (10), Soil health and food (10), Adaptation to climate change (6) and Climate netural and smart cities (1) and joint OCEANCLIMA (1).
  • Read more on the EU Missions on our website.

2 Coordinating and Supporting Actions (CSA) calls

These are typically aimed at (consortia of) a very small niche of organisations that are willing to assist the EC in a certain domain. The topics in question are:

  • A European Social Innovation Catalyst Fund to Advance EU Mission Objectives by Replicating and Scaling-up Existing, Demonstrably Successful Social Innovations
  • on the creation of a transnational network of NCPs

Autoship - a new and durable way of freight transport

Autoship is, as the name suggests, an acronym for autonomous ship. Just like with self-driving cars, the possibilities of an unmanned boat seem endless. It can create more efficient freight transport, around the clock deliveries and these are just a few of the examples. The project has two societal challenges.

At first, De Vlaamse Waterweg was a bit hesitant as their experience with FP7 or Horizon 2020 projects was limited and they had not been very successful up until then. The fact that they were already doing basic research on the topic of autonomous boats, and the administrative help of NCP FLanders helped De Vlaamse waterweg to cross the line and get involved.
