SC1 - Health, demographic change and wellbeing

Responding to this challenge, research and innovation (R&I) under Horizon 2020 is an investment in better health for all. It aims to keep older people active and independent for longer and supports the development of new, safer and more effective interventions.


SC2 - Food Security, Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry, Marine, Maritime and Inland Water Research and the Bioeconomy

The objective is to contribute to securing sufficient supplies of safe, healthy and high quality food and other bio-based products, by developing productive, sustainable and resource-efficient primary production systems, fostering related ecosystem services and the recovery of biological diversity, alongside competitive and low carbon supply chains.


SC3 - Secure, clean and efficient energy

The Energy Challenge is designed to support the transition to a reliable, sustainable and competitive energy system. To make the transition to a competitive energy system, we need to overcome a number of challenges, such as increasingly scarce resources, growing energy needs and climate change.


SC4 - Smart, green and integrated transport

The overall objective is achieving a European transport system that is resilient, resource-efficient, climate-and environmentally-friendly, safe and seamless for the benefit of all citizens, the economy and society.


SC5 - Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials

The Societal Challenge 5 Work Programme focuses on moving to a greener, more resource efficient and climate-resilient economy, with a strong commitment to supporting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and the targets of the Paris Agreement.


SC6 - Europe in a changing world - Inclusive, innovative and reflective societies

The aim of the Societal Challenge 'Europe in a changing world – Inclusive, innovative and reflective societies' (SC6) is to foster a greater understanding of Europe, provide solutions, and support inclusive, innovative and reflective European societies in a context of unprecedented transformations and growing global interdependencies.


SC7 - Secure societies – Protecting freedom and security of Europe and its citizens

This Societal Challenge is about undertaking the research and innovation activities needed to protect the European citizens, society and economy as well as the infrastructures services, the prosperity, political stability and wellbeing.
