The European Commission (DG CNECT) has launched three surveys on future EU investment needs in the research, innovation and deployment of digital technologies and capabilities. The surveys are part of two ongoing studies, in preparation of the next Multiannual Financial Framework (2028-2034): one on the research, development and innovation of strategic digital technologies beyond 2027 and another on the deployment (integration, application and roll-out) of digital technologies and infrastructures and related skills development.

The surveys cover a broad range of digital technological areas, ranging from semiconductors and photonics to artificial intelligence, data, high performance computing and many others.

  • Stakeholder survey: collects feedback on present and future needs and opportunities for EU investments in the R&I and deployment of digital technologies, targeting a diverse group of stakeholders including research organisations, academia, public sector entities, industry (large enterprises, SMEs, start-ups and scale-ups), financial intermediaries (e.g. investors and venture capitalists), industry associations and civil society.
  • Survey on digital technology uptake by the public sector: collects information on the adoption and update of digital technologies by public bodies, as well as on key challenges and opportunities foreseen in the next programming period (2028-2034), targeting specifically public bodies and public service providers in diverse sectors (e.g. public administrations, health, transport etc.)
  • Market survey for the private sector: collects insights from companies of all sizes about their current and envisaged adoption of advanced digital technologies, the key use cases they are exploring and the challenges they face in today’s market environment.

All surveys are open until 23 May 2025

Miricle - Mine Risk Clearance for Europe

The Miricle project, ‘Mine Risk Clearance for Europe’, obtained funding under the European Defence Industrial Development programme call ‘Underwater control contributing to resilience at sea’. The main objective of the project was to achieve a European and sovereign capacity in future mine warfare and create a path for the next generation ‘made in Europe’ countermeasure solutions. In order to realise this objective, Miricle addressed various stages: studies, design, prototyping and testing. These stages inter alia included the successful testing of an XL Unmanned Underwater Vehicle, a protototyped mine disposal system and multiple innovative systems to detect buried mines. Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ), was one of the five Belgian partners in the consortium. Within the project, VLIZ was able to forward its research on the acoustic imaging of the seabed to spatially map and visualize buried structures and objects - in this case buried mines - in the highest possible detail. VLIZ also led the work on ‘Port and Offshore Testing’, building on the expertise of the institute in the field of marine operations and technology.
