New year, new opportunities. The Horizon Europe 2026-2027 work programme was published in December and new calls have recently opened or will open soon. Under the Digital Europe programme, several calls are currently open (deadline March 2026) and a new wave of calls is expected in spring.Are you exploring your options or already developing a proposal? The European Commission and/or its agencies organise info days on the 2026 call topics and these are often complemented by brokerage events, organised by National Contact Point (NCP) networks and/or the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN). These events provide opportunities to connect with potential collaboration partners. In addition, several programmes offer dedicated matchmaking platforms to facilitate partner searches. The Commission has launched BE READY, a new European Partnership for pandemic preparedness. The aim of the partnership is to strengthen the EU's capacity to anticipate, prevent and respond rapidly to epidemics and pandemics. BE READY focuses on advancing research on emerging and re-emerging pathogens and accelerating the development of diagnostics, treatments and vaccines.The new partnership has already launched its first Joint Transnational Call (JTC 2026) focusing on 'Advancing knoweldge of host and pathogens dynamics to better combat emerging diseases'. Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) participates in this call. More information on available funding for researchers based in Flanders and on how to apply is available on the FWO website. The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) has presented the 2026 Comprehensive Impact Study of the EIT, outlining the economic and societal impacts generated by the first eight EIT Knowledge and Innovation Communities from their establishment until 2024. The study, conducted by an independent external contractor, provides an assessment of the EIT’s contribution to European competitiveness and the delivery of EU policy priorities. You can consult the study here. Background: The European institute of Innovation and Technology stands at the crossroad of business creation, innovation and education. It consists of ten knowledge and innovation communities. The overall objective is to transform promising innovations into succesful companies.
The European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) has announced two new opportunities in the field of HPC: Call for proposals for a European Benchmarking Framework The objective of this call is to develop a new set of appropriate metrics and benchmarks for the next generation of EuroHPC infrastructure. The call addresses two topics: A European HPC-centric Benchmarking Framework A European Benchmarking Framework for hybrid quantum-classical computing Deadline to submit proposals is 24 March 2026. Frontier AI Grand Challenge: Building sovereign, large-scale AI The Frontier AI Grand Challenge is a major EU-wide initiative launched by the European Commission and the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking. Its primary mission is to bridge the strategic gap in high-end AI development by fostering the creation of sovereign, large-scale European AI models. The expected outcome of the Frontier AI Grand Challenge is the selection of one proposal to train a frontier AI model that will outperform state-of-the-art models in a number of relevant tasks. The ROOT project obtained funding under Horizon 2020 topic ‘EGNSS applications fostering societal resilience and protecting the environment’. The project, which ran from November 2020 to July 2022, aimed to demonstrate the benefit of Galileo OSNMA signal to increase the robustness of critical telecom infrastructures.
The Flanders-based company Septentrio contributed substantially to completing this objective together with the other ROOT partners. The results of the project partially close a gap in the security of telecommunication networks dependent on satellite-derived time, with indirect benefits in curbing illegal attempts to disrupt network services.
