The results of the 2022 European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant call (call deadline 28 April 2022) were published. Advanced grants are open to active researchers who have a track-record of significant research achievements in the last 10 years. The Principal Investigators (PIs) should be exceptional leaders in terms of originality and significance of their research contributions.

Of the 1647 submitted proposals 218 researchers with 27 different nationalities received an ERC Advanced grant: 64 In Life Sciences, 94 in Physical Sciences and Engineering and 60 in Social Sciences and Humanities. In the ERCEA news articles more background on the evaluation results, call statistics and several project examples are highlighted.

However the statistics and final list are provisional since the UK is still considered non-associated to Horizon Europe. The successful proposals of applicants based in a country in the process of associating to Horizon Europe will be eligible for funding only if the relevant Horizon Europe association agreement applies by the time of the signature of the grant agreement.

Among the 218 selected researchers are five based at Flemish host institutions. The projects of these five PIs are presented in the news articles of Universiteit Gent and KU Leuven. The KU Leuven Institute for Sustainable Metals and Minerals has published an interview with professor Koen Binnemans where he explains what the CIRMET project is about.

  • Koen Binnemans, KU Leuven, “CIRMET - Circular hydrometallurgy for energy-transition metals”, evaluation panel Physical Sciences and Engineering 11
  • Nico Callewaert, Vlaams Instituut voor Biotechnologie, “GlycoCAR - Targeting of glycosylation pathways to empower CAR-T therapy of solid tumors”, evaluation panel Life Sciences 7
  • Giovanni Lapenta, KU Leuven, “TerraVirtualE - Planetary space simulations based on the particle description for electrons and ions”, evaluation panel Physical Sciences and Engineering 9
  • An Martel, Universiteit Gent, “GLOSSI - Targeting skin glycosylation patterns to protect threatened salamanders from disease driven extinction”, evaluation panel Life Sciences 9
  • Frank Verstraete, Universiteit Gent, “ISYS - ''It’s the Symmetry, Stupid!'' Gearing Up Tensor Networks for the Topological Quantum Revolution”, evaluation panel Physical Sciences and Engineering 2

EURHISFIRM - Long-term data for Europe

EURHISFIRM designs a world-class research infrastructure (RI) to connect, collect, collate, align, and share detailed, reliable, and standardized long-term financial, governance, and geographical data on European companies. EURHISFIRM enables researchers, policymakers, and other stakeholders to develop and evaluate effective strategies to promote investment, economic growth and job creation. The RI provides the tools for long-term analysis highlighting the dynamics of the past and the way those dynamics structure our present and future.

The EURHISFIRM European project received € 3.4 million in financing from the European Commission through the H2020-INFRADEV-2017-1 research infrastructures call. The project started with a consortium of eleven research organisations (including University of Antwerp) from seven European countries.
