Programmes Horizon 2020

It is still unclear what the impact of the Brexit will be on Horizon 2020, the European Framework Programme for Research and Innovation running from 1 January 2014 till 31 December 2020. In the case of a 'no-deal' Brexit, the UK will be granted the status of a third country, with the result that UK participants and applicants will no longer have direct access to the budget of the predecessor of Horizon 2020, the 7th Framework Programme and Horizon 2020. In a "no deal" scenario, the UK government has committed to ensure that UK applicants are funded (underwrite guarantee) in all successful UK proposals submitted before the UK leaves the EU.

However, in a number of Horizon 2020 single-beneficiary programmes, third countries do not meet the current Horizon 2020 eligibility requirements to act as beneficiaries (such as European Research Council, SME Instruments and Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Individual Fellowships). It is expected that the European Commission will launch a webpage that will also try to answer Brexit Horizon 2020 questions. The latest information can be found in the Brexit fact sheet of the UK Research Office (UKRO) and the no-deal Brexit overview on this website.
