An analysis of 6707 Horizon 2020 ERC projects gives a picture of what projects have been funded per scientific sub domain and the contribution of ERC funded research to three key policy areas of the European Union. The mapping exercise has been compiled in these factsheets:

 

  • European Green Deal 14% of all funded projects contribute to the EGD, of which 9% to the Boosting climate action area
  • Europe fit for the digital age 10% of all funded projects contribute to this policy area, of which 4% to AI
  • EU4Health 34% of all funded projects, of which 9% to brain and human mind research and 8% to cancer research

Methylomic – Hope & Improved outcomes for Crohn’s disease patients across Europe

The METHYLOMIC project, ‘targeting hope for personalised medicine in immune-mediated inflammatory diseases’ obtained funding from Horizon Europe’s Health Cluster. The project aims to personalise treatment allocation and enhance the effectiveness of medications for chronic immune-mediated diseases such as Crohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriasis. BIRD, the Belgian inflammatory bowel disease research and development group, is a partner in the project and is involved in the OmiCrohn trial, a prospective randomised clinical trial for individualised therapy in Crohn’s disease patients. With BIRD’s active role in this trial, the project is set to deliver predictive, biomarker-based therapies that bring renewed hope for Crohn’s disease patients across Europe.
