The Horizon Europe project AI-BOOST has launched 4 specific Generative AI challenges to drive significant research progress in different areas:

  • Challenge 1: GenAI-Based Natural Language Mission Generator for Autonomous Robots in Agriculture (deadline: 25 August 2026)
  • Challenge 2: Agentic AI for Automated CAD Generation and Autonomous Simulation (deadline: 25 August 2026)
  • Challenge 3: Generative AI for Enhancement of Clinical Datasets (deadline: 8 September 2026)
  • Challenge 4: Generative AI for Automatic Test Case Generation from Crash Databases & Standards (deadline: 8 September 2026)

Each challenge focuses on a specific technical area, guided by a Challenge Owner who define clear objectives and goals, expected outcomes and the real-world application context.

The competition will have two phases, the Spark phase and Advance phase, the AI-BOOST panel will focus resources and support on the strongest candidates, while ensuring continuous monitoring of scientific and technical progress throughout the competition.

  • Spark Phase: Submit a Concept Note for evaluation, with five selected winners per challenge each receiving a €28,500 prize and a place in the next stage.
  • Advance Phase: Complete a five-month development and validation programme, culminating in a live demonstration to compete for a final €100,000 prize.

The overall objective of the Horizon Europe AI-BOOST project is to create and run a highly replicable AI open innovation competition that attracts the best teams all over EU and Associated Countries to drive scientific progress in the major AI Areas. The project will foster collaboration between the key stakeholders in AI community to define attractive AI challenges with the potential to lead trustworthy and human-centric real-world solutions

Miricle - Mine Risk Clearance for Europe

The Miricle project, ‘Mine Risk Clearance for Europe’, obtained funding under the European Defence Industrial Development programme call ‘Underwater control contributing to resilience at sea’. The main objective of the project was to achieve a European and sovereign capacity in future mine warfare and create a path for the next generation ‘made in Europe’ countermeasure solutions. In order to realise this objective, Miricle addressed various stages: studies, design, prototyping and testing. These stages inter alia included the successful testing of an XL Unmanned Underwater Vehicle, a protototyped mine disposal system and multiple innovative systems to detect buried mines. Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ), was one of the five Belgian partners in the consortium. Within the project, VLIZ was able to forward its research on the acoustic imaging of the seabed to spatially map and visualize buried structures and objects - in this case buried mines - in the highest possible detail. VLIZ also led the work on ‘Port and Offshore Testing’, building on the expertise of the institute in the field of marine operations and technology.
