The European Commission and ESA have launched a new website for the Earth System Science Initiative (ESSI). The site brings together collaborative research on climate change, biodiversity loss, ocean health and other environmental challenges. It presents participating projects, scientific alliances and emerging results from EU- and ESA-supported research.

The European Commission announced the launch of the new Earth System Science Initiative (ESSI) website, developed jointly with ESA.

ESSI was launched in 2020 to connect research projects supported by EU research and innovation programmes with ESA Earth observation activities. The initiative links satellite observations, ground-based measurements and modelling to improve understanding of Earth’s changing environment.

The website is organised around six scientific flagships:

  • atmospheric composition
  • biodiversity and vulnerable ecosystems
  • extreme events and climate adaptation
  • ocean health
  • polar change and global impacts
  • terrestrial carbon science.

ESSI currently brings together 30 alliances, 71 projects and more than 430 organisations.

Visitors can use the site to explore participating projects, see how collaborations are structured and read impact stories, news and events linked to the initiative.

More information is available on the ESSI website: https://ec-esa-essi.eu/
