Mapping of ERC funded research in Horizon 2020 (2014-2020) - factsheets

Published on | 2 years ago

Programmes ERC   ERC

Over the course of the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme (2014-2020), the ERC provided funding for over 6,700 research projects, amounting to a total value of €13.3 billion. These projects encompassed a wide range of scientific disciplines, creating a significant and diverse portfolio.

Recognising the importance of obtaining a comprehensive understanding of the breadth and diversity of the research it supports, the ERC conducted an in-depth analysis of these funded projects. This analysis involved the use of an internally developed, non-hierarchical classification system comprising nearly 900 terms. Through this approach, the ERC was able to capture the scientific essence of funded projects, highlight interdisciplinary areas and synergies, and identify the valuable contributions of ERC frontier research in addressing global challenges.

Explore ERC projects

As a result of this effort, a series of downloadable factsheets has been compiled on this page. The overview factsheet (PDF) presents general statistics regarding the ERC's H2020 project portfolio and highlights key information from all the factsheets, providing a glimpse into their contents.

Additionally, there is a collection of 25 factsheets that contain data from the ERC evaluation panels in the Starting, Consolidator, or Advanced Grant schemes. These factsheets offer a comprehensive overview of the projects funded across the 25 ERC evaluation panels, which are categorized into three scientific domains: Life Sciences (LS) (PDF), Physical Sciences and Engineering (PE) (PDF), and Social Sciences and Humanities (SH) (PDF).

Furthermore, a dedicated factsheet focuses specifically on projects funded under the Synergy Grant scheme (PDF). Together, these factsheets provide a distinctive and valuable insight into the cutting-edge research landscape within the ERC project portfolio.

Furthermore, policy factsheets on three key policy areas of the European Union were published: Europe Fit for the Digital Age (PDF), European Green Deal (PDF) and EU4Health (PDF).

A summary of the findings can be found in this ERC press release.

RUSTICA - Converting organic residues into bio-based fertiliser products

The RUSTICA project obtained funding under Horizon 2020, more in particular under the topic ‘Closing nutrient cycles’.  RUSTICA focuses on demonstration and implementation of circular bio-based nutrient valorisation chains, focusing on waste from the fruit and vegetable agro-food system. The project kicked off in 2021 and will run until 2024. It will use a strong multi-actor approach to co-create both socio-economic and technological knowledge in four case study regions in Europe and one in Colombia. The Flanders-based company DRANCO is one of the project partners and acts as technical project manager for the entire project. DRANCO participates in the project to develop its own technologies, to network and to help make the transition to a more circular based economy.
