"Brave new world: Building Europe’s capacities for defence and security R&D" event is a public conference promoted by Science|Business to address critical questions related to European Defence and Security research and development (R&D).

The event is designed to convene high-level representatives from EU institutions, national governments, academia, leading research institutions and key industry sectors such as aerospace, defence, AI, and cybersecurity. The aim is to provide a platform to foster discussions on European defence strategies, funding opportunities, and international cooperation.

The agenda is structured around three central themes:

  1. The need for a "total security" approach, which acknowledges that modern threats are not only military but also cyber, economic, and infrastructural. This perspective necessitates robust R&D development value chains integrating civilian, dual-use, and military research. The role of a prospective new defence commissioner will be a focal point.
  2. The event will  examine the European defence industrial strategy, and the challenge of balancing sovereignty and autonomy with global technological advancements. Discussions will explore how EU procurement and R&D policies can boost cooperation with international partners.
  3. The conference will address the critical question of financing Europe’s future defence and security R&D agenda moving forward, including the European Defence Fund, Horizon Europe & FP10, Digital Europe and NATO’s DIANA programme  A key related topic will be to gather industry recommendations on how to increase pre-competitive collaboration in defence and security R&D.

Miricle - Mine Risk Clearance for Europe

The Miricle project, ‘Mine Risk Clearance for Europe’, obtained funding under the European Defence Industrial Development programme call ‘Underwater control contributing to resilience at sea’. The main objective of the project was to achieve a European and sovereign capacity in future mine warfare and create a path for the next generation ‘made in Europe’ countermeasure solutions. In order to realise this objective, Miricle addressed various stages: studies, design, prototyping and testing. These stages inter alia included the successful testing of an XL Unmanned Underwater Vehicle, a protototyped mine disposal system and multiple innovative systems to detect buried mines. Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ), was one of the five Belgian partners in the consortium. Within the project, VLIZ was able to forward its research on the acoustic imaging of the seabed to spatially map and visualize buried structures and objects - in this case buried mines - in the highest possible detail. VLIZ also led the work on ‘Port and Offshore Testing’, building on the expertise of the institute in the field of marine operations and technology.
