This event organised by the Commission looks at progress under the 1+ Million Genomes Initiative and the next steps for Europe’s genomic data infrastructure. It is designed to bring together policymakers, researchers, health stakeholders, industry and patient representatives to discuss how genomic data can support research, healthcare and health policy. The programme also looks at sustainability, future governance and links with AI and high-performance computing.
The event focuses on the 1+ Million Genomes Initiative (co-funded under Digital Europe), which supports the secure and effective use of genomic and related health data in Europe. It aims to take stock of progress, discuss lessons learned, and help shape the strategic agenda beyond 2027. Topics include the value of European collaboration on genomic data, the role of health data infrastructures and enabling technologies, the achievements of the initiative so far, and options for long-term sustainability.

The Department of Economy, Science and Innovation of the Flemish government coordinates the Horizon 2020 Coordination and Support Action SAPHIRe, which started on 1 December 2018. The aim of the project is to secure the adoption of personalised medicine in all European regions, including sparsely populated and remote regions and regions with different innovation capacities.
The activities of SAPHIRe are complementary to the smart specialisation partnership on personalised medicine – S3P4PM, which is also coordinated by the Department of Economy, Science and Innovation.
