On 24 and 25 October 2023, the yearly Security Research Event (SRE2023) will take place in Brussels. This event is organized by the European Commission in cooperation with the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU, the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, and the Swedish Innovation Agency (Vinnova).

SRE2023 will consist of a conference and an exhibition. The conference will focus on the future of research in security and the relevant European policy context. Megatrends such as climate change, extreme weather, digitalisation and emerging technologies have profound implications on the contemporary security paradigms. The policy context in this conference will focus on these implications and how they affect security research.

The exhibition allows past and ongoing European security research projects to present their results. Representatives of various EU agencies will also be present. During the exhibition, small scale demos will illustrate (practical) solutions for security issues. Projects stem from funding schemes such as Horizon Europe, the Border Management and Visa Instrument (BMVI), the Internal Security Fund (ISF) and various National Research Programmes.

While participation is free, registration is mandatory. All relevant information can be found through the official website.

Thematic panels on 24 October:

  • Introductory High Level Round Table on the future of security research
  • Cascading effects of crises: a new challenge for security research or just more of old troubles?
  • Participative resilience: citizens as owners of their own security and as contributors to EU societal resilience.

Thematic panels on 25 October:

  • Natural, accidental and intentional disasters of the future: are we prepared?
  • Digitalisation of society: new threats, new opportunities, new responses?
  • Foreseeing risks, developing EU capabilities: can we do more?
