The seminar explores the role of technical universities in collaboration with industry to enhance Europe's defence capabilities in light of geopolitical challenges. It aims to engage participants in discussions about European defence planning, dual-use technologies, and the education of engineers for the modern defence sector.

The seminar will address key themes including:

  • Engaging technical universities in European defence planning and strategic security initiatives.
  • Leveraging dual-use technologies to strengthen resilience and accelerate knowledge transfer from science to application.
  • Educating a new generation of engineers equipped with the digital and analytical skills essential for the modern defence sector.

Speakers will include representatives from notable institutions and organisations involved in defence and technology. An official presentation of the European Ranking of Engineering Programs (EngiRank 2025) will also be featured. Participation provides an opportunity for stakeholders to exchange views, learn from peers, and establish partnerships at the intersection of higher education, research, innovation, and defence policy. BEAT-AF - Ground-Breaking Electroporation-based intervention for Atrial Fibrillation treatment

The Horizon2020 project BEAT-AF brings together 9 European renowned clinical centres in France, Belgium, Czechia, Germany and Austria. Together, the consortium strives to revolutionize Atrial Fibrillation (AF) treatment through catheter ablation and contribute to decrease the huge burden of AF in Europe. The BEAT-AF project kicked off in 2021 and will run until 2026. The department of electrophysiology of the AZ Sint-Jan Hospital in Bruges is partner in the project and has so far contributed to the pre-clinical development, the first in man studies and first registries of the revolutionary AF treatment put forward by the consortium. The first pilot studies show that the treatment is safe, effective and efficient.
