Surveys on future investments in R&I and deployment of digital tech

The European Commission (DG CNECT) has launched three surveys on future EU investment needs in the research, innovation and deployment of digital technologies and capabilities. The surveys are part of two ongoing studies, in preparation of the next Multiannual Financial Framework (2028-2034): one on the research, development and innovation of strategic digital technologies beyond 2027 and another on the deployment (integration, application and roll-out) of digital technologies and infrastructures and related skills development. The surveys cover a broad range of digital technological areas, ranging from semiconductors and photonics to artificial intelligence, data, high performance computing and many others. Stakeholder survey: collects feedback on present and future needs and opportunities for EU investments in the R&I and deployment of digital technologies, targeting a diverse group of stakeholders including research organisations, academia, public sector entities, industry (large enterprises, SMEs, start-ups and scale-ups), financial intermediaries (e.g. investors and venture capitalists), industry associations and civil society. Survey on digital technology uptake by the public sector: collects information on the adoption and update of digital technologies by public bodies, as well as on key challenges and opportunities foreseen in the next programming period (2028-2034), targeting specifically public bodies and public service providers in diverse sectors (e.g. public administrations, health, transport etc.)  Market survey for the private sector: collects insights from companies of all sizes about their current and envisaged adoption of advanced digital technologies, the key use cases they are exploring and the challenges they face in today’s market environment. All surveys are open until 23 May 2025.

Europe’s Virtual Worlds Strategy

The Openverse project hosted last week a high-impact workshop, “National Initiatives and the European Partnership on Virtual Worlds,” aligning stakeholders around the European Commission’s Virtual Worlds strategy. The initiative, rooted in the July 2023 Communication on Web 4.0 and Virtual Worlds, aims to build sustainable, inclusive, and trustworthy virtual environments across Europe. Key stakeholders include Siemens, SAP, VRT, KU Leuven, CNRS, CNR, Fraunhofer, and DFKI.  The mission of the Openverse project is to coordinate public-private efforts under a co-programmed Horizon Europe Partnership model, fostering technological development, supporting Digital Decade objectives, and guiding a €150 million Horizon Europe funding pipeline through a Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA). Openverse is establishing a Virtual Worlds Association, headquartered in Brussels, targeting 200–350 members from European companies, research institutes, startups, and public services. For Flemish actors (universities, research institutions, technology providers, media companies, and public bodies) Openverse presents a strategic opportunity, as there is room to align well-positioned use cases from your own roadmap with a cross-sectoral innovation ecosystem. Connection points include contacting VRT or KU Leuven (as they are founding members), submitting use cases via the official template, participating in community consultations, and engaging in SRIA drafting working groups. Early involvement will be critical to shaping standards, driving interoperability, and influencing funding priorities in virtual worlds’ development.

EITHOS - European Identity Theft Observatory System

The EITHOS project, funded under Horizon Europe Cluster 3 call “Online identity theft is countered”, aims to develop a “European Identity Theft Observatory System” (EITHOS). The system will provide easy access to information and intelligence about previous and current identity theft related trends to empower EU citizens, Law Enforcements Agencies (LEAs), and policy makers to further contribute to the prevention, detection, and investigation of crimes related to online identity theft. The Cyber and Data Security Lab (CDSL), part of the Law, Science, Technology and Society (LSTS) Research Group at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), is one of the 12 partners in the EITHOS consortium, contributing its vast expertise on legal aspects of data protection, cybersecurity and information security law and policy.
