The European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) has released its first draft report on the European Commission’s proposal for the next Framework Programme for Research and Innovation for the period 2028-2034 (FP10). The report still needs to be formally adopted by the committee, but it already provides a clear indication of the priorities of the Parliament’s lead committee for shaping the future EU research and innovation landscape. Some headlines of the amendments proposed by ITRE: Striving for a stand-alone programme, based on the current Horizon Europe structure, counting with 220 billion Euro More autonomy for ERC and EIC Funding allocation should be designed to be expert-driven Need for an optimal coordination between FP10 and the European Competitiveness Fund (ECF) In Pillar 1: introduction of a fast track to excellence Programme In Pillar 2: governance should be guided by experts, and introduction of Fast Track to Innovation instrument and European Demonstrator Scheme In Pillar 3: introduction of challenge-driven "ARPA"*-like approach implemented by Programme Managers; role of EIT should be explained unless its elimination has been decided upon Simplification to reduce administrative burden for beneficiaries, with shorter proposals, and only targeted use of Lump Sum Funding (and other simplified cost options) (thus not by default); the (Annotated) Model grant Agreement should be available by the start of the programme Introduction of definitions of the kind of actions: research actions, research&innovation actions, innovation actions European partnerships based on contractual agreements (in stead of memorandum of understanding) Background: The Commission has launched in July 2025 its regulation proposal and specific programme proposal of the next Framework programme of 2028-2034 (FP10), cfr. our resp. news item *ARPA - Advanced Research Projects Agency (from USA)
The foresight study "Future Research and Technology infrastructures for Europe" is financed by the European Commission (DG RTD) and carried out by Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI, Technopolis Consulting Group Belgium, and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. The study was granted under the multi-year framework contract Foresight on Demand. More informatin about FoD is available here and about the foresight study here. The goal of the foresight study is to identify and explore possible scenarios for a future “pan-European ecosystem of research and technology infrastructures”. Specifically, the following objectives will be addressed: 1. Identify the trends, megatrends and weak signals for the long-term evolution, potentials and needs of RTI from a European perspective. 2. Proposal of plausible scenarios for RTIs, that consider European RTIs in their ecosystems and their contribution to European scientific and technological competitiveness. 3. Map the implications of the identified trends and proposed scenarios for European RTIs governance and policy, mainly from an EU perspective. During the first phase of this project that will run untill the end of 2026, the European Research and Technology Infrastructure stakeholders will be mapped. Therefore, the project team invites stakeholders interested in the study or willing to participate in the project workshops and events to reach out to matthias.deschryvere@vtt.fi and simone.kimpeler@isi.fraunhofer.de.

The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action (MSCA) European Innovative Training Network “PBNv2 - Next generation Pass-By Noise approaches for new powertrain vehicles” started in May 2017. Their research has the shared objective of investigating the possibilities to decrease pass-by noise of vehicles.
The project is a collaboration between 17 research institutions and companies in the European automotive R&D and provides a learning environment for 14 PhD fellows. The Belgian partner is the Noise and Vibration Research Group of KU Leuven, and this project is one of the many Horizon 2020 MSCA Innovative Training Networks that the KU Leuven research group participates in.
