Switzerland associated to Horizon Europe, Digital Europe and Euratom

On 10 November 2025, Switzerland and the EU signed an agreement enabling Swiss participation in Horizon Europe and Digital Europe and Euratom, and this retroactively to 1 January 2025. This means that researchers and innovators can participate as beneficiaries in Horizon Europe and Digital Europe from the 2025 programme year onwards and can submit project proposals in the role of coordinators. Many details about participation of Switzerland in Horizon Europe and Digital Europe can be found in an extensive FAQ list of SERI, the Swiss administration. Regarding participation in strategic areas: in Horizon Europe Switzerland receives full access to calls for proposals in strategic areas (artificial intelligence, quantum, communication and network technologies, and space sensitive research topics). Access to certain calls for proposals in the field of space within Horizon Europe is currently still being clarified.  In Digital Europe: Switzerland cannot participate in call topics in Specific Objective 3 (cybersecurity) and 6 (semiconductors)   Additionally, the agreement lays the groundwork for Switzerland’s future participation in other EU programmes like Erasmus+ (expected to begin in 2027) and EU4Health, which is contingent upon the health agreement's activation within the Switzerland-EU package.

EIC deep tech challenge for climate adaptation

Europe is experiencing rapid warming leading to significant climate risks, including heat-related health issues, crop stress from drought, water scarcity, and flooding. To address these challenges, the European Commission's EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change is seeking innovative solutions. That is why they have joined forces with the EIC accelerator team to publish a challenge that is looking for start-ups and scale-ups who can provide solutions to tackle these climate risks. This Challenge competition focuses more in particular on deep tech solutions including nature-based solutions (NbS) and engineering approaches reinforced by AI and other Key Enabling Technologies (KET).   You can find more information about the call and the application procedure on this website. Please note there is an info day on friday morning 14 November about all the EIC accelerator challenges. You can watch in online via this webpage.

Launch of RAISE Initiative for AI in Science

The European AI in Science Summit in Copenhagen saw the launch of RAISE, a new virtual institute aimed at enhancing AI in scientific research. Funded with €107 million under Horizon Europe, RAISE seeks to unite resources and drive strategic advancements in various scientific fields. RAISE is designed to centralise resources essential for developing artificial intelligence applications in science (AI in Science), including AI computational power, data, skills, and research funding. Through a collaboration with the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU), RAISE aims to provide dedicated access to AI computational power for researchers across Europe, supported by a €600 million financial commitment from Horizon Europe. Additionally, RAISE will focus on identifying and addressing data gaps in AI research, attracting global scientific talent with €75 million earmarked for Networks of Excellence and Doctoral Networks. It also aims to double Horizon Europe's annual AI investments to over €3 billion, enhancing funding specifically for scientific research. The Coordination and Support Action, which received €3 million from Horizon Europe, marks the initial step in interlinking the AI science community. Looking ahead, RAISE will grow in phases to adapt to the evolving needs of the AI science ecosystem. The European Commission plans to work closely with EU Member States, research institutions, and the private sector to ensure the sustainability and governance of RAISE throughout the next long-term EU budget from 2028-2034. The target audience includes researchers and innovators in the field of artificial intelligence and science, as they will directly benefit from the resources and funding provided through the RAISE initiative. RAISE will roll out in phases to adapt to evolving scientific and technological needs. The European Commission will collaborate with member states, universities, research organizations and industry partners to shape the institute’s long-term form under the next EU budget (2028–2034). If successful, RAISE could become a key pillar of Europe’s strategy to maintain scientific leadership, boost competitiveness, and secure technological sovereignty in the global AI landscape.

Evaluation results - ERC Synergy Grant 2025 call

The selected projects of the 2025 European Research Council (ERC) Synergy Grant call (call deadline 6 November 2024) were published. Synergy grant projects consist of minimum two to maximum four researchers or Principal Investigators (PIs) and their teams that jointly address ambitious research problems that could not be addressed by the individual Principal Investigators and their teams working alone. Proposals are evaluated in not predefined evaluation panels, composed of top scientists and scholars coming from all over the world and in addition by remote referees with necessary specialised expertise, in a three-step evaluation including interviews. In total 712 proposals were submitted for this call of which 66 projects with 239 PIs were selected for funding. In the ERCEA news article the list of selected projects and several other examples of projects are highlighted. Among the 239 selected researchers are two researchers based at a Flemish host institution. The projects of the two PIs are presented in the news articles of Universiteit Gent and KU Leuven. Patrick Degryse (KU Leuven) is together with 3 other PIs involved in the project CoCo - Connected Communities in early medieval Europe. Bart Merci (Universiteit Gent) is together with 3 other PIs involved in the project FireSpace - Fire safety in space exploration.
